A Surprisingly Pleasant Oil Change
I’d postponed my SUV’s oil change for months, and today was finally the day. What I expected to be a chore turned out to be one of the nicest service experiences I’ve ever had. Many people still believe getting an oil change here is a nightmare — couldn’t be further from the truth.
Service That Exceeds Expectations
Nicaraguan businesses are service-oriented, focused, efficient, and genuinely friendly. A friend had recommended a local garage, reminding me how important it is to ask for personal suggestions. Around early afternoon, I simply drove there, parked in front, and went to the counter.
The lady at the desk asked what type of vehicle and engine I had, then sent a young guy to check the oil filter. She explained I’d need seven liters and offered me two oil options, also asking if I wanted an original or generic filter. I went for the budget-friendly choice.
No-Nonsense Pricing and Immediate Service
She quoted $75 — at first, I thought it sounded high, but then realized it included the oil, filter, and labor. That’s a fair deal. They even gave me a $2 discount because they didn’t have change. The best part? No waiting around or scheduling an appointment — they started immediately.
I pulled the car over the pit, sat down nearby, and watched as they got to work with impressive precision. The mechanic even cleaned my air filter with compressed air.
Quick, Clean, and Thoughtful
The whole setup was neat and well-organized. Of course, in Europe or Australia, a service pit like that might be illegal — someone would probably fall in and sue the owner. But in Nicaragua, people are expected to be self-aware and watch their step.
Ten minutes later, my car was ready. As I was leaving, one of the workers even directed traffic so I could pull out safely onto the street.
Why This Experience Stood Out
No appointment, no upselling, and definitely no “gringo pricing.” Just honest work, a friendly smile, professional service — and even coffee if you wanted it while waiting.
Fantastic experience. I’ll definitely be back.
